1:50Now PlayingIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that it was "just a question of time" before new variants of the coronavirus emerge.
Netanyahu made the remarks while virtually addressing the World Economic Forum, which is taking place in Geneva this year.
Because of the risk of the emergence of new virus variants, Israel has shut down all commercial flights, Netanyahu said.
While the airports are closed, the country will be vaccinating millions in order to "try to win the race between mutation and vaccination," he added.
In just one month, Israel has vaccinated over a quarter of its 9.3 million people and is on pace to inoculate the entire adult population by March.
At the same time, it has one of the developing world's highest rates of infection, with some 8,000 new cases detected each day.
This week it tightened a month-old lockdown by closing its international airport to nearly all flights.
The Israeli Health Ministry has recorded over 610,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and at least 4,493 deaths from the disease since the start of the pandemic last year.
