This comes after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told senators Tuesday to be ready to vote as soon as next week on a budget reconciliation package that would lay the groundwork for swift passage.
The action provides a first test of Republican opposition to the White House priorities as well as to the new president’s promise of a “unity” agenda.
It's the first time in a decade that Democrats have controlled Washington, and the party says it has no time to waste trying to broker compromises with Republicans that may, or may not, happen.
Bipartisan work will also be needed after President Biden canceled a permit needed to build the Keystone XL pipeline while a coalition of Indigenous people, environmental activists and some rural landowners are celebrating.
The battle over the $8 billion pipeline began when the Canadian-owned TC Energy proposed the project in July 2008, according to a CTV news timeline.
Since then, the pipeline has been presented to three presidents and been subject to protests and lawsuits filed by TC Energy and opponents.
If built, the pipeline would run 1,200-miles from the Alberta tar sands in Canada to Nebraska, entering South Dakota at a spot 32 miles northwest of Buffalo.
The oil would be then be transferred to another TC Energy pipeline before being shipped to the Gulf of Mexico
