Charlotte Bennett, 25, accused Cuomo of asking her questions about her sex life and other intimidating behavior in an interview published Saturday by the New York Times. Last week, former economic aide Lindsey Boylan, who accused Cuomo of harassment in December, detailed her experience in a Medium post.
Cuomo, a third-term Democrat, has denied both claims. In a statement on Sunday responding to Bennett’s accusations, the 63-year-old said interactions he considered “playful” may have made others uncomfortable.
“I acknowledge some of the things I have said have been misinterpreted as an unwanted flirtation,” Cuomo said. “To the extent anyone felt that way, I am truly sorry about that.”
The governor stopped short of acquiescing to a probe led by New York Attorney General Letitia James that was championed by dozens of lawmakers and politicians. State law requires the attorney general to seek an official referral from the governor to begin an investigation.
Instead, Cuomo’s office said on Sunday that the governor would allow James to select a “qualified private lawyer” to conduct a review. That person would be overseen by the attorney general and afforded the ability to call witnesses, subpoena documents, and conduct a full independent investigation. The move was a reversal from a proposal by the governor’s office a day earlier, which called for a review to be led by a former federal judge with ties to a close Cuomo adviser. That proposal elicited wide-ranging criticism that Cuomo wasn’t taking the accusations seriously.
