0:48Now Playing(AP) The president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, received his COVID-19 vaccination on Monday, the first person in the country to do so.
Ghana received the world's first delivery of coronavirus vaccines from the United Nations backed COVAX initiative last week.
In a ceremony at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, the head of the country, his wife and other top authority figures received their vaccinations.
Akufo-Addo said he hoped his vaccination would "set an example" to show that the vaccine was safe "so everybody in Ghana can feel comfortable about taking this vaccine".
The arrival of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the West African country marks the beginning of the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history, according to the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
It is a linchpin of efforts to bring the pandemic to an end and has been hailed as the first time the world has delivered a highly sought-after vaccine to poor countries during an ongoing outbreak.
"The ceremony this morning I believe, will help change minds about the conspiracies that people have against this virus," said Brigadier General Nii Adjah Obodai, Commanding officer of the 37 Military Hospital where the ceremony took place.
Religious leaders attending the event also called on Ghanaians to disregard conspiracy theories and get vaccinated to stop the spread of the virus in the country.
