1:21Now PlayingVice President Kamala Harris said Monday that the U.S. has the “imperative to strengthen infrastructure in our cities and create good union jobs” as the Biden administration readies a sweeping stimulus package to follow its $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief proposal.
“Think of small businesses. Cities are incubators for startups and hubs for mom and pop shops. These businesses create jobs and foster community,” Harris said during her keynote address at the CityLab 2021 conference, hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Aspen Institute. “And we need to make sure they have access to the capital they need to get through this time.”
The White House has begun work on an economic infrastructure package that President Joe Biden hopes to unveil after the Senate considers his legislation providing additional federal dollars for coronavirus vaccines, testing and protective equipment. And Biden has been outspoken in his support of labor unions since entering office, saying over the weekend that workers should be allowed to freely decide whether to participate in labor organizing efforts at an Amazon.com Inc. warehouse in Alabama.
The Senate — where Harris represents the tiebreaking vote — still needs to act on the first coronavirus package, which was approved by the House of Representatives on Saturday in a party line vote. Harris touted support from community leaders for that relief bill — which includes $350 billion for state, local, and tribal governments — and said the funding would help keep small businesses open and first responders on the job.
