1:15Now PlayingThe White House confirmed Tuesday that Biden family dogs Major and Champ have been banished from the White House for a doggie time out in Delaware after Major caused a "minor injury" to someone he didn't know.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki explained that the German shepherds "are still getting acclimated and accustomed to their new surroundings and new people."
She said the Biden's younger dog Major, who is about three years old, "was surprised by an unfamiliar person" and "acted in a way that resulted in a minor injury to the individual."
Psaki said the incident was handled by the White House medical team with no further treatment needed.
She said plans were already in place to send the dogs to Delaware for care while Biden's wife, Jill, traveled this week to Washington state and California.
Psaki assured the public that Major will not be euthanized as a result of the incident, insisting, "Major Biden is a member of the family. So I can assure you that."
Psaki was also asked about the Biden's reported plans to add a cat to the family. She said she doesn't have an update on a cat but knows it will "break the internet" when an announcement is made.
Major burst onto the national scene late last year after Biden broke a bone in his right foot when he slipped during playtime with the dog at their home near Wilmington. The Bidens adopted the dog in 2018 from the Delaware Humane Association.
They got Champ, who at age 13 is less spry and likely calmer, from a breeder. He joined the family after Joe Biden was elected vice president in 2008.
On a separate topic, the White House refused to confirm that there are any plans for a U.S.-China summit or diplomatic meeting in Alaska, as reported by a Chinese publication.
Psaki said she has seen those reports but currently has "no details finalized or confirmed at this point."
The press secretary said Biden "we will look forward to seeking opportunities for engagement" with China but could not provide any information about plans for a meeting.
