London shoppers and passersby have been reacting to the television interview given by the UK's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan with US chat show host Oprah Winfrey.
The chat, which first aired in the UK on Monday evening, has divided people around the world, following claims from the couple of racism and callousness within the royal family towards the Duchess of Sussex, who said she had struggled with suicidal thoughts.
During the two-hour appearance, Harry also revealed the problems had ruptured relations with his father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William, illuminating the depth of the family divisions that led the couple to step away from royal duties and move to California last year.
Following the interview, which was shown in the US on Sunday, people in London's diverse borough of Newham reacted with sadness after hearing what the young royals said they had been through.
Passerby Taslima says she was shocked to discover how unlike the traditional fairytale the royal family appeared.
Others, like Sandra Berndt, think Harry and Meghan should have not expected the same financial privileges as they had when they were still working members of the royal family.
But not everyone had strong views. Passerby Ash says he doesn't "care about the royals" - a thought expressed by one or two others.
Buckingham Palace said the “issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning,’’ and are taken very seriously.
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members,’’ the statement said.
The statement is the first comment by the palace following Harry and Meghan’s two-hour interview with Oprah Winfrey in which they alleged that Meghan had experienced racism and callous treatment during her time in the royal family.
