Police arrested a white 21-year-old Georgia man. Many of the victims were women of Asian descent.
The man accused of killing eight people told police his act was not racially motivated, and that he had a potential "sex addiction."
Mayor Bill de Blasio called the shootings "domestic terrorism" and said the law enforcement will have "strong presence across the five boroughs.
"To see this hatred, to see it take such a violent form is extraordinarily distressing," the mayor said." "We all need to understand the pain that Asian-Americans are going through right now in this city."
While the motive for the attack also remained unclear, many members of the Asian American community saw the shootings as an attack on them, given a recent wave of assaults that coincided with the spread of the coronavirus across the United States.
The virus was first identified in China, and then-President Donald Trump and others have used racially charged terms like "Chinese virus" to describe it.
