0:57Now PlayingMuslim pilgrims performed socially distanced Tawaf (circumambulation) on the sprawling white marble that surrounds the black cube-shaped Kaaba in Mecca in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Only limited numbers of worshippers are being allowed inside the Grand Mosque that houses the Kaaba in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.
Saudi authorities are only allowing individuals who've been vaccinated or recently recovered from the virus to perform prayers at the Kaaba.
Pilgrims are practicing Tawaf by walking in circles seven complete circles around the Kaaba in an anti-clockwise, while Sai (striving) refers to the ritual of walking back and forth seven times between the two small hills of Safa and Marwa, located in the Grand Mosque.
Muslims in many parts of the world marked the start of Ramadan on Tuesday, but a spike in coronavirus cases in some countries has restricted once again signature features of the holy month such as large evening feasts and lengthy prayers in mosques.
Ramadan is marked by increased prayers, dawn-to-dusk fasting and nightly feasts with family and friends, though crowded shoulder-to-shoulder prayers in mosques and large gatherings to communally break the daylong fast remain prohibited in some countries due to the continued spread of coronavirus.
During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from any food or drink, including water, from morning to night.
The month-long practice is aimed at heightening remembrance of God, curbing unhealthy habits and deepening gratitude.
