1:34Now PlayingOn a day when a former suburban Minneapolis police officer was charged with second-degree manslaughter for killing a 20-year-old Black motorist, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the incident, combined with others, show that "too often in this country, law enforcement uses unnecessary force."
Psaki repeated President Joe Biden's support for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act that is currently in Congress.
"The president has repeatedly said that he believes we need police reform and that's why he's calling on Congress to deliver that to his desk," she said.
The legislation includes measures to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct, to enhance transparency and data collection, and to eliminate discriminatory policing practices.
The bill establishes new requirements for law enforcement officers and agencies, including to report data on use-of-force incidents, to obtain training on implicit bias and racial profiling, and to wear body cameras.
