7:50Now PlayingIndian Point's Unit 3 nuclear reactor shut down on April 30, 2021. For nearly 45 years, Unit 2 and 3 provided about 25% of the power for New York City and Westchester County. The power plant was dogged by opposition from environmentalists and safety advocates for decades to shut it down. In 2017, amid contract renewal discussions, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the operator Entergy decided to close the plant earlier than originally planned.
Natural gas is set to replace the reactors' capacity, complicating New York State’s climate ambitions. The loss of clean energy comes at a time as President Joe Biden hopes to push the country away from fossil fuels. Indian Point Unit 3 is the 12th reactor to close since 2013, so the U.S. must turn around if it wishes to reach those green goals.
