1:34Now PlayingA large crowd marched for Juneteenth in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday with the day carrying even more significance after Congress and President Joe Biden created a federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery.
Marchers were joined by Opal Lee, the 94-year-old activist, who is often referred to as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth."
The annual two-and-a-half mile walk in Fort Worth by Opal and others was part of her efforts to see the momentous day recognized as a federal holiday.
Biden signed a bill Thursday that was passed by Congress to set aside Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Juneteenth commemorates when the last enslaved African Americans learned they were free. Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865, but word didn't reach the last enslaved Black people until June 19, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to Galveston, Texas.
