1:15Now PlayingTropical Storm Elsa is strengthening as it nears Florida’s Gulf coast, expected to make landfall as a hurricane Wednesday north of Tampa.
Elsa’s top winds reached 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour Tuesday and will likely hit 75 mph, just above the threshold to become a Category 1 hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 2 p.m. local time.
Elsa is on track to come ashore about north of Tampa, in a sparsely populated area surrounded by nature preserves. As it approaches, it could push a dangerous storm surge into Tampa Bay, raising ocean levels from 3 to 5 feet.
