1:44Now PlayingPope Francis on Tuesday spent his second morning convalescing in Rome's Gemelli Hospital following a planned intestinal operation.
According to the daily Holy See Press Office's bulletin, he is "doing well" with the check ups and his "post-surgery recovery is regular".
The Vatican appeared calm on Tuesday, Swiss guards stood at the entrances, and the faithful were happy to visit around Saint Peter's Square.
"It was a shock learning he was in the hospital," said Gustavo Ligori, an Italian visitor to Vatican City.
Silvia Jarrín, an Argentinean tourist, hoped the Pope would "recover quickly" and to "take back the helpful role that God gave him into the society".
Francis' next routine appointment with the public would normally be on Sunday, July 11, when he customarily appears at a window overlooking St. Peter's Square and blesses the faithful below and speaks for a few minutes, often about current events.
If he were still hospitalized then, Francis might opt, if he feels up to it, to do what one of his predecessors did when recovering at Gemelli Polyclinic.
St. John Paul II, during some of his multiple hospital stays, appeared at his room's window to wave and bless well-wishers gathered outside.
