1:40Now PlayingThousands of Argentine youngsters with pre-existing medical conditions started being immunized Tuesday with the Moderna vaccine.
Young people between the ages of 12 and 17 who get access to the vaccine suffer from diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular, kidney, and respiratory diseases, cancer and are affected by intellectual and developmental disabilities, among other ailments.
The goal is to immunize about 900,000 adolescents before the Delta variant spreads massively in the South American country.
The more contagious Delta variant is a major concern in the South American country. More than 80 people have been infected in recent weeks, most of them travellers from neighbouring countries and Europe.
Health authorities are using a batch of 3.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine donated by the United States a few days ago to inoculate the young population.
The inoculant works through messenger RNA technology, and two doses are required for full immunization.
Argentina had to amend a law through a decree to be able to receive Moderna's vaccines; after that same law made it difficult in late 2020 to reach an agreement with Pfizer, whose vaccine is also used to inoculate the adolescent population.
After arduous negotiations with Pfizer, Argentina recently managed to seal an agreement to purchase 20 million doses during 2021.
Argentina has administered a first dose of different vaccines (Sputnik V, AstraZeneca and Sinopharm) to 25.3 million people and two doses to some 7.3 million out of a total population of approximately 45 million.
