1:20Now PlayingGreek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Athens suburb of Varibobi on Wednesday a day after a wildfire burned more than 100 homes and businesses in the area.
Greece's Fire Service took advantage of cooler morning hours to send low-flying helicopters and planes to dump water on charred forests around Tatoi, 20 kilometers (12 1/2 miles) north of Athens, where more than 500 firefighters had battled through the night to contain the blaze.
No deaths or severe injuries have been reported, but more than 500 people spent the night in hotels.
"We were up against an extremely difficult fire in conditions of extreme hot weather," Mitsotakis said. "I hold on to the fact that, thank God, we have not until now had any losses of human life as positive and that the evacuation system worked in an exemplary fashion."
The fire outside Athens sent clouds of smoke over the Greek capital, obscuring visibility and prompting health authorities to warn people with breathing difficulties to remain indoors.
Temperatures in parts of Greece reached 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday, in what authorities describe as the worst heat wave since 1987.
The Greek island of Evia and southern Peloponnese region have also been forced to evacuate areas under threat from wildfires.
Neighboring countries are facing similar conditions, fueling deadly wildfires in Turkey and blazes in Italy and across the Mediterranean region.
