Aug 23, 20211:12Now PlayingThe U.S. military said an Afghan woman gave birth aboard an Air Force C-17 that flew from the Middle East to Ramstein Air Base in Germany last Saturday.
The mother began having complications during the flight last Saturday.
On arrival at Ramstein, U.S. medical personnel came aboard and delivered the child in the aircraft's cargo bay.
"Once we arrived on the plane we realised that the baby had not delivered, that the mum was still in labour and it was very close to delivery," U.S. Army Capt. Erin Brymer, a clinical staff nurse in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, said in an interview with German television on Monday morning.
Brymer, also a member of the women's health team at Ramstein Air Base, said she had a lot of experience delivering babies and hoped "this one wouldn't be any different."
The baby girl and mother are in good condition, Brymer added.
Ramstein is currently being used as a transit post for people being evacuated from Afghanistan.
