Aug 23, 20211:56Now PlayingAn Afghan women's rights activist on Sunday voiced her fears over living under the Taliban.
34 year-old Taranom Seyedi returned from Iran in 2011 and spent ten years working for women's rights in Afghanistan.
She described the fear and frustration she felt when she first saw Taliban fighters in the capital, Kabul.
"I felt so scared that I couldn't even breathe," she said in a tearful interview with The Associated Press.
During the Taliban's earlier rule, women were largely confined to their homes, television and music were banned, and public executions were held - all in accordance with the Taliban's harsh version of Islamic rule.
The Taliban have sought to project a more moderate image than when they last ruled the country,
But, just days after the Taliban took control of the country, thousands of Afghan women - journalists, civil activists, government workers - are living in hiding, desperate to flee but with no clear way out.
Deeply mistrustful of any Taliban promises of inclusivity and amnesty, they hunker down in safe houses or inside their homes, hoping to get their names on evacuation lists.
Seyedi believes life will become harder under Taliban rule.
"Living in Afghanistan will be very difficult for women," she said.
