Thousands of people are still thought to be trying to leave the capital city, and it's not clear that all of them will be able to before the end of the month
"And so the question before us now is, are we going to keep our deadline or are we going to keep our promise?" asked Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski of New Jersey.
"Are we going to allow the mission to determine the timetable or are we going to let the timetable determine the mission?"
The White House said Wednesday around 19,000 people were evacuated from Kabul over the last 24 hours. It said the U.S. has evacuated or facilitated the evacuation of around 82,300 people since the Taliban takeover in mid-August.
The Pentagon says it will continue to evacuate people from Afghanistan until the U.S. leaves next Tuesday, but during the final days it will need to prioritize getting U.S. troops and military equipment out of the country.
"We had a promise that we would get them out. How can they trust America anymore if we if we violate our trust and our promises," asked Rep. Michael McCaul, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The lawmakers were joined by cast members and crew from the CBS television show, "The United States of Al," which focuses on the friendship between an American combat veteran and an Afghan interpreter who comes to the United States.
Parker Young, a lead actor on the show pleaded with President Joe Biden to continue the evacuation as long as necessary.
"You've often spoken about the soul of our nation. Well, sir, there can be no better opportunity to demonstrate to the world who we are as a nation and as a people than this moment. We beg you to act now with compassion and with urgency," he said.
But any decision by Biden to stay longer could reignite fighting between the Taliban and Western troops running the airlift.
