Aug 26, 20210:46Now Playing(AP) Conductor Ivan Fischer received his third vaccination on stage at the Budapest Festival Orchestra's open-air concert in front of thousands of people on Wednesday.
The world-renowned conductor and composer was given the jab through a hole in the sleeve of shirt, while he continued conducting with his other arm.
Fischer's aim is to encourage people to get vaccinated, to set an example, and to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting against the pandemic.
In addition to the conductor, the prestigious orchestra also took part by testing themselves for the virus during the concert to show the importance of getting the vaccine.
The COVID-19 pandemic ravaged Hungary in the spring, making it for a time the country with the most virus deaths per capita in the world.
But the number of new infections began to plummet going into summer amid one of the European Union's fastest vaccination campaigns, which used jabs from Russia and China as well as those procured through the EU.
But while Hungary was an early vaccine leader, more than 32% of its adult population has still not received a jab.
As its vaccination campaign has dramatically slowed, many other European countries have overtaken Hungary's vaccination rate, and a looming fourth wave of the pandemic has leaders searching for ways to protect more of the population.
After reports emerged in July that China's Sinopharm vaccine may provide poor protection to the elderly, the Hungarian government became the first country in the 27-member EU to offer booster shots to those that want them.
As of Wednesday, 219,000 people had received a booster shot.
Amid ongoing vaccine hesitancy and a slow uptick in cases that Hungary's chief medical officer, Fischer used his orchestra's notoriety to promote vaccination and raise awareness of the importance of protecting against the spread of coronavirus variants.
