Aug 25, 20211:30Now PlayingUS Vice President Kamala Harris laid flowers in tribute to US Senator John McCain on the anniversary of his death near the shores of Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi.
Harris paused briefly Wednesday after meeting with Vietnamese officials to pay respects to the former U.S. Navy pilot who became a prisoner of war and later was instrumental in bringing the wartime foes together.
McCain and former Sen. Kerry played important roles in the normalization of bilateral relations in 1995.
McCain's Skyhawk dive bomber was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and he was taken prisoner and held in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" prison for more than five years.
Harris spoke briefly near the monument by Truc Bach lake, where he landed after parachuting from his damaged plane.
McCain died on August 25 in 2018.
