Aug 24, 20212:08Now PlayingSeveral leaders of Group of Seven industrialized democracies have expressed concerns with U.S. President Joe Biden over the Aug. 31 deadline to withdraw from Afghanistan amid ongoing evacuations, European Council President Charles Michel said Tuesday.
In a joint presser with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after the G-7 virtual conference, Michel said that "several leaders expressed concerns about the timing of August 31."
He didn't say what response Biden gave the leaders.
According to an administration official, Biden plans to stick with his deadline for completing the U.S.-led evacuation from Afghanistan.
The decision reflects in part the U.S. military's concern about heightened security threats to the massive airlift that began ten days ago.
Michel said the EU remains concerned about European citizens and Afghan people who worked with them being able to safely reach Kabul airport.
He added that in talks with the U.S., the EU raised "the need to secure the airport, as long as necessary, to complete the operations; and second, a fair and equitable access to the airport, for all nationals entitled to evacuation."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also announced that the EU is quadrupling its humanitarian aid budget for Afghanistan, to a total of 200 million euros ($234.9 million) for 2021.
But she also warned that EU development assistance for Afghanistan, budgeted for a total of one billion euros ($1.2 billion) over the next seven years, is now frozen and will be subject to conditions and guarantees.
