1:39Now PlayingBritish Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday the government was doing "everything possible" to secure safe passage to Afghans who can resettle in Britain but were not make able to make it out of the country during last month's evacuation following the Taliban taekover.
Johnson told Parliament the UK is also formally launching a separate resettlement program providing legal routes for up to 20,000 Afghans in the region over the coming years, with 5,000 in the first year.
During his address on Afghanistan, Johnson told MPs extra funding would be provided for additional school places and long-term accommodation around the country for the new arrivals.
The prime minister also defended the UK's 20 years of military action in Afghanistan, listing a number of achievements including enabling millions of girls to get an education and protecting the West from al-Qaida.
Johnson called an airlift to evacuate Western citizens and their Afghan allies after the Taliban takeover of the country "the biggest humanitarian airlift in recent history."
Both Johnson and US President Joe Biden have faced widespread criticism for their handling of the withdrawal of international troops.
