0:53Now PlayingBoxing legend and presidential candidate Manny Pacquiao was greeted by hundreds of supporters during his campaign sortie in Manila on Wednesday.
The eight-division world champion and Philippines Senator who last year retired from the ring signed autographs and took selfies with his supporters while organizers kept on reminding the crowd to practice social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Pacquiao is still optimistic even though he is currently on the third place in a recent presidential survey.
Pacquiao has vowed to jail corrupt politicians and provide free housing to the poor.
His rags to riches life story and legendary career brought honor to his Southeast Asian nation, where he is known by his monikers Pacman, People's Champ and National Fist.
He left his impoverished home in the southern Philippines as a teenager and stowed away on a ship bound for Manila.
He made his professional boxing debut as a junior flyweight in 1995, at the age of 16, fighting his way out of abject poverty to become one of the world's highest-paid athletes.
Pacquiao also said he will form a “peace panel” that will negotiate with Beijing on the South China Sea dispute if elected to the top post, while also deepening defense ties with the U.S.
“Our goal is to be a friend to all nations,” Pacquiao said at a virtual forum organized by the foreign correspondents association. The senator said that while he’ll explore diplomatic channels to resolve the sea row, China “should not abuse and trample on” the Philippines’ rights.
The Southeast Asian nation has been locked in a dispute with China in South China Sea, a key global trade gateway and energy source. Candidates to succeed President Rodrigo Duterte have pitched different approaches to the issue, with Vice President Leni Robredo pushing a coalition to counter China’s militarization, while frontrunner Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos is eyeing a deal with Beijing. National elections will be held on May 9.
