0:13Now PlayingUkrainians laid wreaths Friday at a memorial in Kyiv commemorating the victims who were killed during mass protests in 2014 that ousted the country's Russia-friendly president.
People lay flowers and participated in a church service at a memorial on Maidan square in central Kyiv dedicated to the victims who came to be known as the "Heavenly Hundred."
Over 100 protesters were killed at the square during clashes with police starting on 18 February 2014, which ended in the fall of the regime of President Viktor Yanukovych.
"There were rivers of blood, many died on that day," said Yuri Akseny, the son of a killed protester.
"I think we should start commemorating the victims on this day (18 February)," he added.
The unrest began in November 2013 following the Ukrainian government's decision to suspend preparations for an association treaty with the European Union and to seek closer economic relations with Russia.
After the fall of the Yanukovych government, Russia annexed Ukraine from Crimea and supported seperatist rebels in the country's east in a conflict that has killed over 14,000 people since 2014.
In recent weeks, Russia has massed troops near Ukraine's border, sparking Western fears of an invasion.
