1:57Now PlayingPope Francis on Wednesday demanded that all sides in the Russia-Ukraine dispute examine their consciences before God and pull back from threats of war as he called for a day of fasting and prayer next week.
In an appeal at the end of his weekly general audience, Francis said he was pained and alarmed by the latest developments, which he said "discredited international law".
The pope didn't specify Russia's recognition of two rebel-held areas of eastern Ukraine and the massing of Russian troops at Ukraine's borders, but told the faitful listening that "once again, the peace of everyone is threatened by vested interests".
Francis called for believers and non-believers alike to mark 2 March, Ash Wednesday, in the Catholic calendar, as a day of fasting and prayer.
The Vatican is toeing a fraught diplomatic and oecumenical line, given its efforts to reach out to the Russian Orthodox Church and convene a second meeting between Francis and its leader, Patriarch Kirill.
