2:52Now PlayingSouth Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham grilled Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson Tuesday on everything from her religious beliefs to her position as a defense attorney for Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
In a heated line of questioning, Graham asked Brown about her faith, and how often she goes to church.
Jackson responded that she is a Protestant. But added she is reluctant to talk about her faith in detail because she wants "to be mindful of the need for the public to have confidence in my ability to separate out my personal views."
Graham then offered pointed comments about what he said was unfair criticism by Democrats of Justice Amy Coney Barrett's Catholicism ahead of her 2020 confirmation.
"Just imagine what would happen if people on late night television called you an F'ing nut, speaking in tongues because you've practiced the Catholic faith in a way they couldn't relate to or found uncomfortable," he said. "And I just hope going in the future that we all can accept that and that Judge Barrett, I thought, was treated very, very poorly."
The South Carolina Senator voted for Jackson's confirmation as an appeals court judge last year but has openly expressed his frustration after President Joe Biden picked her over South Carolina judge Michelle Childs, who Graham was supporting.
Graham fumed at the hearing that "left wing radical groups" derailed Child's chances because she was too conservative.And he said the fact that those same left wing groups support Jackson "is problematic" for him.
Graham also pressed Jackson on work she did as a public defender and later in private practice representing four Guantanamo Bay detainees.
As he wrapped up his remarks, the Republican Senator went on a tirade about the 39 Guantanamo detainees remaining in U.S. custody, saying, "as long as they're dangerous, I hope they all die in jail if they're going to go back and kill Americans. It won't bother me one bit if 39 of them die in prison. That's a better outcome to letting them go."
