1:55Now PlayingUkrainian refugees continue to cross the border at the Medyka border crossing into Poland, as Ukraine and Russia are due to start a new round of peace talks in Istanbul Tuesday in their first face-to-face negotiations in more than two weeks.
Ukraine is striving for a cease-fire agreement in talks with Russian negotiators in Turkey and sets a “minimum” goal of an improvement in the humanitarian situation that has caused millions to flee their homes in the wake of Moscow’s invasion, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
The EU has received more than 3.8 million refugees from Ukraine, half of which are children, according to the European Commission.
At the Ukrainian border with Poland, shopping trolleys filled with luggage rattle down a small path leading from passport control, through a village of aid tents to buses waiting to carry people to a nearby town.
The rate of refugees arriving here has slowed from a peak in early March of some 155,000 – 160,000 daily arrivals to around 30,000 in recent days.
“It is scary there. Children are crying," said Marina Starobilets, 29, a refugee from the Zhytomyr region, with her child.
"Maybe people are waiting it out, to see if their city will get attacked or not," said AlinaBeskrovna, 31, from Mariupol.
She and her mother fled the besieged city five days ago crossing 18 check points - 16 Russian, 2 Ukrainian.
She said many Mariupol residents were being sent to Rostov in Russia.
"Putin is very unpredictable and judging from what happened in Lviv two days ago, I think it will not stop in my region, it will not stop at Ukraine," she said. "It will go further so the world should prepare for more waves to come."
The latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) show a big drop-off in daily border crossings by refugees.
Over the last week, the top single-day traffic amounted to slightly more than 68,000 – a high number but far below the peak outflows recorded in early March, when more than 200,000 refugees left Ukraine each day on March 6 and March 7.
For three of the last four days, the daily total has not surpassed 50,000 – some of the lowest flows since the Russian invasion on February 24.
