1:12Now PlayingShanghai reported its first deaths as the biggest Covid flareup China has faced during the pandemic prompted more cities around the country to impose restrictions on their residents. Three people died on Sunday in Shanghai, according to the municipal government. Aged between 89 and 91, all three had underlying conditions and were each unvaccinated. Another 16 are in critical condition, Wu Qianyu, an official with the city’s health commission, said at a briefing Monday.
The city is ensuring daily necessities are being distributed to the elderly living alone and in nursing homes. Due to the shortage of delivery personnel and the huge demand for supplies, truck drivers have to travel around in Shanghai several times a day. In addition to the necessary nucleic acid testing, they wear protective clothing throughout the day. In order to minimize contact with the outside, some drivers even sleep in their trucks.
With the increase in the amount of supplies donated to nursing homes by the society, Cainiao Logistics has opened a special warehouse for the elderly under closed-loop management in Shanghai’s western Jiading District. The first batch of goods that has been received and processed was nearly 100 tons, and the warehouse will later on offer daily necessities to more than 60 nursing homes located around Shanghai.
The staff said that the warehouse mainly stores common groceries such as grain, oil, rice and noodles, and the materials are divided in two batches. Then the staff will customize different delivery plans according to different delivery needs.
