0:16Now PlayingRussian forces on Tuesday resumed an assault on the Azovstal steel plant, thought to be the last bastion of a Ukrainian regiment in the beseiged city of Mariupol, after civilians were evacuated from the area.
Ukrainian fighters announced that Russian forces began storming the facility, which includes a warren of underground tunnels and bunkers.
It came as a convoy carrying dozens of civilians evacuated from the plant over the weekend arrived in the relative safety of a Ukrainian-controlled city.
The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine said in a statement that 101 women, men, children, and older persons left the Azovstal steelworks.
The Russian military said earlier that some of the evacuees chose to stay in areas held by pro-Moscow separatists.
One of former Azovstal workers, who spent almost two months in the plant bunker with his family was evacuated to Bezymenne on Russia-controlled side.
He claimed that fights were going on almost constantly all the time, and that the way out of the bunker was blocked by bombing, but that a nearby building collapse meant people could climb the debris to come out.
Getting a full picture of the unfolding battle in the east has been difficult because airstrikes and artillery barrages have made it extremely dangerous for reporters to move around. Both Ukraine and the Moscow-backed rebels fighting in the east also have introduced tight restrictions on reporting from the combat zone.
