Ukraine lost a higher proportion of its population in World War II than then-imperial master Russia.
The war brought to the fore Ukrainian nationalists, led by Stepan Bandera, who sided with the Germans to fight the Soviets in hope of gaining independence from the communist state.
A large part of Moscow's accusations against Kyiv of neo-Nazism and collaborationism ties back to Bandera.
