Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe -- in his capacity as acting president -- imposed a state of emergency across Sri Lanka after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country.

Wickremesinghe also imposed curfew in the Western Province, which houses Colombo, his spokesman Dinouk Colombage said by phone Wednesday. Protesters had gathered outside the premier’s office to demand his resignation, and were seen entering the building after police fired tear gas.

Rajapaksa left for the Maldives with his wife earlier in the day on a military plane, the Air Force spokesman said in televised comments. He had promised to resign Wednesday, but the speaker hasn’t yet received a formal resignation, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg News.

The South Asian nation is bankrupt, partly due to policies made by Rajapaksa’s administration. Inflation is forecast to rise to 70% due to severe shortages of food, fuel and medicines.
