0:46Now PlayingThe Russian Defense Ministry said Friday it has completed pulling out troops from the western bank of Dnieper River in Ukraine's southern Kherson region, a move that was announced earlier this week.
In a statement carried by Russia's state news agencies, the ministry said the withdrawal was completed at 5 a.m. on Friday, and not a single unit of military equipment was left on the western bank.
Areas the Russian military withdrew from included the city of Kherson, the only regional capital Moscow seized during the course of its military operation in Ukraine.
Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konasgenkov claimed that Ukrainian troops tried to disrupt the transfer of civilians and Russian troops by shelling the crossings over the Dnieper.
"During the night, the enemy tried to disrupt the transportation of civilians and the transfer of troops to the left bank of the Dnieper. During the night, the Ukrainian Armed Forces hitthe crossings across the Dnieper River five times with rockets from the American HIMARS multiple launch rocket system," Konashenkov said.
