0:44Now PlayingNATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Vilnius that the alliance is keeping a close eye on the situation in Russia, emphasising the mistakes made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Stoltenberg said “the events over the weekend are an internal Russian matter,” but added that they also were "yet another demonstration of the big strategic mistake that President (Vladimir) Putin made with his illegal annexation of Crimea and the war against Ukraine."
The NATO chief also said that the bloc was "monitoring the situation in Belarus" and condemned "Russia's announcement about deploying nuclear weapons."
Although Belarus' army is not known to have taken part in Russia’s war on Ukraine, the country allows Russia to base troops there that have fought in Ukraine and made a deal this year for deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons.
