0:22Now PlayingRussia's Investigative Committee said on Wednesday it opened a criminal probe into a private jet which crashed north of Moscow.
Spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said her agency "initiated a criminal case on the fact of an aviation accident in the Tver region on the grounds of a crime under Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation violation of traffic safety rules and operation of air transport."
She added that "an investigation team has left for the scene, all the necessary forensic examinations will be appointed, and a set of investigative actions will be carried out to establish the causes of the crash."
The plane, which was carrying three pilots and seven passengers, was en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg when it went down more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the capital, according to officials cited by Russia’s state news agency Tass.
Mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was on the passenger list, but it wasn't immediately clear if he was among those on board, though Russia’s civilian aviation regulator, Rosaviatsia, said he was on the manifest.
