US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin welcomed the President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., to the Pentagon Friday, where the two leaders were set to discuss the importance of the US-Philippines defense relationship in the midst of growing concern about provocative Chinese military action in the Indo-Pacific.

President Joe Biden said he was committed to “deepening maritime and security ties” with Japan and the Philippines as he sought to assure allies worried about increasingly assertive Chinese actions in disputed waters.
