Columbia University warned students protesting on its West Lawn that they will be suspended if they don’t clear the area by 2 p.m., saying the encampment violates multiple school policies.

The decision marks an escalation in the university’s response to the pro-Palestinian encampment, which was established more than a week ago.

Columbia called in the police to clear protesters for trespassing on April 18, but that move made students dig in and re-establish the encampment. It also inspired similar sit-ins and demonstrations at other schools across the country, including Harvard University, Yale University and the University of Southern California.

The New York school is now seeking to clear the latest encampment ahead of commencement, scheduled for May 15.
