0:14Now PlayingUkraine and Russia said the Kremlin had begun a counteroffensive in Russia’s Kursk border region to try to push back the first military incursion into its territory since World War II.
“Everything is going according to the Ukrainian plan,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told reporters in Kyiv on Thursday, seeking to reassure the public as he confirmed that Russian troops were attempting to reverse the cross-border advance by his forces.
Russia’s Defense Ministry, at almost the same time as the Ukrainian president was speaking, said its troops retook 10 settlements in the Kursk region in the past two days, the first official statement from Moscow that an assault had started. Russian forces also repelled Ukrainian attacks in the area over the past day, the ministry said on its Telegram channel.
