1:22Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in a phone call to start negotiating an end to war in Ukraine, reversing three years of US policy on the conflict and ramping up pressure on European allies and the government in Kyiv.
Trump posted Wednesday on social media that he had spoken to the Russian leader and that their teams would “start negotiations immediately,” beginning by calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy later Wednesday. Zelenskiy’s office later confirmed that he talked with Trump for about an hour.
“We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations,” Trump said of Putin. “We want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine. President Putin even used my very strong Campaign motto of, ‘COMMON SENSE.’ We both believe very strongly in it.””
The phone call capped a momentous 24 hours that underscored Trump’s determination to upend former President Joe Biden’s policies on the conflict. Tuesday night, the US announced that Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, had flown to Russia and secured the release of American teacher Marc Fogel.
