0:11Now PlayingIsrael’s government said the bodies of three hostages released by Hamas on Thursday showed they had been murdered by the militant group, angering Israelis and further imperiling the fragile ceasefire in Gaza.
“All of Israel is united in grief,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday. The perpetrators “do not deserve to walk this earth. Nothing will stop me. Nothing.”
The three bodies — those of two infant brothers and Oded Lifshitz, a man in his 80s — were handed to Israel as part of the first phase of a truce between the warring sides, which ends in early March. Israel and Hamas are in the early stages of negotiating an extension. The US hopes the sides turn the six-week pause into a permanent end to fighting, though it’s said Israel has the right to return to war.
For now, Hamas is scheduled to release six living captives on Saturday as part of the deal, with Israel in turn freeing around 600 jailed Palestinians.
A fourth corpse was also released on Thursday. It was meant to be that of Shiri Bibas, the mother of the boys. But Israel said forensic tests showed it was a woman from Gaza and not another of the roughly 80 remaining hostages.
