1:33Now PlayingMexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she’ll announce tariffs and other measures on Sunday in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose levies on goods from her country this week, signaling a souring of relations between long-time trade partners.
Sheinbaum said she will use Mexico City’s main square, the Zocalo, to convene supporters at noon and detail her plan, she said at her daily news conference. The Mexican peso slumped as much as 1.5% against the US dollar while Sheinbaum spoke Tuesday.
“Our goal isn’t to begin an economic confrontation, which unfortunately is the opposite of what we should be doing,” she said. “It’s inconceivable not to think of the damage this will cause to US citizens and companies. No one wins with this decision.”
Trump delivered Tuesday on his threat to hit Canada and Mexico with sweeping import levies of 25% and doubled the tariff on Chinese goods to 20%, spurring swift reprisals that plunged the world economy into a deepening trade war. Canada has already hit back, imposing tariffs on $107 billion of US products overnight.
