0:45Now PlayingOpposition deputies threw smoke grenades in Serbia’s national assembly, disrupting a session confirming the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and a debate on laws designed to ease months of anti-government protests in the Balkan country.
At least three deputies were injured in the ensuing brawl, one hospitalized in serious condition, according to Speaker of Parliament Ana Brnabic. Opponents of President Aleksandar Vucic and the ruling party also used pepper spray and threw bottles at cabinet ministers during the Tuesday session, said Brnabic, a Vucic ally and former prime minister.
“Serbia has risen so that the regime will fall,” read a banner unfurled by opposition lawmakers, referring to the ongoing demonstrations triggered by a deadly roof collapse in the northern city of Novi Sad that left 15 dead in November.
As street protests led by students and activists have rocked the country over the past three months, the outgoing government has moved to meet some of their demands. They include higher spending on high education, a law which was on the agenda for Tuesday’s session in parliament.
