“In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor,” Harris, 60, said in a statement on Wednesday. “I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for governor in this election.”
Harris, an Oakland native and former US senator, was well positioned to be a frontrunner in the state’s gubernatorial race in a crowded field of Democratic candidates seeking to succeed Gavin Newsom, who is barred from seeking a third term. Her decision clears the way for other Democratic hopefuls vying to lead a state whose economy is the world’s fourth-largest if it were its own country.
