US District Judge Paula Xinis ruled that Abrego Garcia's detention appeared to be "constitutionally infirm" and directed US officials to set him free immediately.
Abrego Garcia's lawyers obtained an emergency order to temporarily stop the administration from taking him back into custody, citing fresh steps the government had taken in an immigration court to revive the effort to deport him.
