The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck 45 kilometers (28 miles) northwest of Montalban in Carabobo province, according to the US Geological Survey. It was followed almost immediately across the world by a 6.9 magnitude temblor in northern Japan, which rattled buildings in Tokyo.
