The court rejected a Louisiana congressional map that was drawn with a second majority-Black district, with Justice Samuel Alito saying the current map was an "unconstitutional racial gerrymander."
The ruling is likely to help Republicans and undercuts what had been the most significant remaining part of the Voting Rights Act, with dissenting Justice Elena Kagan saying the decision rendered Section 2 of the law "all but a dead letter."
