Qatar has asked liquefied natural gas vessels to wait outside the Strait of Hormuz until they’re ready to load amid escalating tensions in the region, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.
The precautionary order, which advises vessels to avoid the Persian Gulf until a day before loading, probably won’t delay shipments, the person said, asking not to be identified as the information was not made public. European natural gas rose as much as 4.8%.
Around 20% of global LNG trade passes Hormuz, making it a key chokepoint for vessels. Speculation that shipments could be delayed as the war flared up between Israel and Iran days ago had already pushed energy prices higher.
The decision by QatarEnergy, the world’s biggest LNG exporter, is the first such known directive by a hydrocarbons producer in the Persian Gulf.
The move by the Qatari producer coincides with increased tensions in the oil market, with the Strait of Hormuz used by some of the world’s biggest producers to move crude supply to global markets. About a fifth of the world’s oil production passes through the chokepoint.
