Israel’s unilateral attack on Hamas in Qatar did not advance Israeli or American goals in trying to bring an end to the Middle East conflict, the White House said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read a statement Tuesday during the press briefing that expressed US concern over the Israeli strike that has roiled tensions in the Middle East.
“The President views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States, and feels very badly about the location of this attack,” Leavitt said, adding that President Donald Trump spoke with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the emir and prime minister of Qatar following the attack.
“However, eliminating Hamas who have profited off the misery of those living in Gaza is a worthy goal,” she said. “President Trump wants all of the hostages in Gaza, the bodies of the dead, released and this war to end now.”
Leavitt said the White House was notified by the US military that Israel was attacking Hamas, shortly before the strike. She said Trump directed US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to notify the Qataris of the pending attack, which he did.
Trump assured the Qatari leader that such an attack wouldn’t happen again on his soil, Leavitt said.
Leavitt side-stepped questions about whether the president had directly made his displeasure known to Netanyahu, saying only that in their conversation, the Israeli prime minister insisted that he wants to make peace quickly.
