Both parties remain at an impasse, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune added this morning it’s “unlikely” the Senate will have votes scheduled this weekend. meaning the US government shutdown could extend into next week if the Senate does not pass a stopgap funding bill on Friday. “They’ll have a fourth chance tomorrow to vote to open up the government. If that fails, then we’ll give them the weekend to think about it. We’ll come back and we’ll vote again on Monday,” Thune said while speaking to reporters at the Capitol.
The shutdown could have significant economic impacts, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating a cost of $400 million per day in lost compensation, and some economists warning that mass firings could sap corporate confidence and reduce capital investments.
