4:53Now PlayingJB Hunt Transport Services Inc. shares rose in late trading after the freight transportation company reported a quarterly profit that topped expectations.
Third-quarter earnings of $1.76 a share topped the $1.46 average of analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The results got a boost from a 12% increase in operating income at its intermodal unit, helped by cost-saving initiatives such as moving fewer empty containers, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
The results are a positive sign for the Lowell, Arkansas-based trucking company as the industry looks to move past years of weak shipping demand and excess trucking capacity. Competitors including Schneider National Inc. and Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. reported softer earnings in recent quarters, underscoring the ongoing challenges for carriers.
JB Hunt’s shares rose as much as 15% in extended trading on Wednesday. The stock has declined 19% this year, compared with a 13% advance by the S&P 500 Index.
While cost cuts bolstered results in the company’s intermodal, dedicated and truckload segments, the freight industry remains muted. Volumes for most of the company’s segments below estimates, Bloomberg Intelligence said in a research note.
Some shipping capacity could evaporate if the federal government follows through with threats to enforce English language proficiency requirements for drivers, but JB Hunt said it doesn’t expect to see any material impact on its own capacity, according to Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Hobbs.
“There have been some signs, based on what we are seeing in our truck and brokerage operations, that it could have a broader industry impact,” he said during the company’s earnings call.
Bloomberg's Lee Klaskow reports.
